This log is from Kiora's point of view, who was one of the original members of the quest for Leya's shrine. To start, the quest was for titled warriors, and then eventually a few others they had invited to join them. Evidently there had been some major disagreements among those participating concerning who the quest should be open to. I had been aware that the quest was going because of posts on the boards, but being a very low level cleric I hadn't tried to involve myself. As the in-fighting came to a head, the GM running the quest intervened and spoke to some of the participants and it was made clear that anyone interested should be included. A post was made on the boards giving an open invitation to a gathering, and this log is of that meeting. So this was my first direct involvement in the quest for Leya's shrine.

This meeting took place in March, 1997. I'm not sure exactly what level I was at this time, but it was under ten. I had only been playing the game for a bit over three months. So in a lot of ways I was really out of my league and was very nervous! But my character's dedication to Leya wouldn't let me pass up the opportunity. It's a good thing too. The experiences I had with the quest and the relationships I formed with some of the participants shaped the next several years of my roleplay with Danay and helped shape part of who she would become.

You'll probably note a few historical inaccuracies in things Miriweather said, along with a few things that don't quite mesh with the final official story. The GM told me one time that she was flying by the seat of her pants a lot of the time and quite a bit was made up as she went along as she was put on the spot with questions. Which explains a lot. (Thankfully storylines are run much differently these days to try and avoid that type of problem.) You'll probably also notice that I hadn't yet gotten into good RP habits of doing things like capitalizing my sentences, and a bit of slight overacting on my part. Heh. Please just ignore all the above! (grin)

There was a bit of OOC oriented talk at the start of this log that I have mostly edited out that had to do with discussions with the GM running the quest. So the first part might seem slightly disjointed.

 

[Helden, Lady Kythyn's Repose]
Paneled in sheets of mithril alloy, this room is of such large proportions only a giant could find it cozy. One wall is dominated by three immense portraits, with a plaque below. Against the opposite wall you see a simple executioner's axe lying cradled upon a shrine to Leya. A wingback chair and footstool scaled to accommodate a gigantic frame sit beside a heavy alloy tower shield supported by three axes turned blade down. You also see a painting.

Morgaine smiles at Kythyn.

Morgaine says, "although it would be a first for me"

Kythyn says, "The final "suggestion" delivered to me was that we seek out the storyteller Meriweather again"

Kythyn says, "With that little information, I would ask ye to discuss past develoments among yerselves until I return"

Kythyn says, "and please remain here"

Lady Kythyn just went out.

Deepspring says, "Okay, so tell me about Meriweather."

Morgaine says, "Can someone tell me who Merriweather is...I don't recall her."

Deavon says, "Yes, I am sorry I missed her visit"

Myste says, "Filifor's ex wife"

Myste says, "came to tell us about Leya"

Deavon asks, "And is Lady Merriweather a fiter?"

Myste says, "no she is an empath"

You say, "she told the entire story that the scroll that was found by Jorrdan ended"

Myste nods to you.

Morgaine asks, "Jorrdan when did you find the scroll?"

Myste says, "and a very moving and touching story it was"

Myste asks, "have you all read the scroll?"

Deepspring says, "Well, could you reiterate the story? I've only heard pieces."

Jorrdan says, "I found the scroll several days before her visit in a golem box. Lady Myste has it."

Myste removes an ancient ragged scroll from inside her doeskin jacket.

Shadowkatt says, "Miriweather told of a young lad...he was quite good looking she says and all that..."

Myste says, "pass around to all who have not read it"

Shadowkatt says, "And that he and Leya fell in love..."

Kythyn just came through a hidden door which shut behind her.

Kythyn exclaims, "Hail all!"

Deavon says, "Love... the root of all problems"

You say, "he is elven"

Shadowkatt asks, "Shall I finish or no?"

Kythyn says, "I must report that I am unsuccessful"

Sylanae says, "Please do"

Sylanae nods toShadowkatt.

Danay nods to Shadowkatt.

Shadowkatt nods.

Myste says, "he was successful in all he did, but one day tried to enter a wizardstower to learn"

Shadowkatt says, "The lad wanted to take his love, Leya, to his people and show her to them..."

Kythyn says, "please finish Shadowkatt, I dinnae mean to interrupt"

Shadowkatt says, "Leya decided that she couldnt go..."

Shadowkatt says, "Yet anyway..."

Shadowkatt says, "So he rode off to his homeland only to find it being invaded"

Deepspring asks, "What was it being invaded by? Was it said?"

Shadowkatt says, "So he took up his sword and rode off into the battle..."

Diandra says, "a brave lad at that"

Shadowkatt says, "I think we figured out what they were..."

You say, "she only described it as a dark evil or something like that"

Shadowkatt says, "anyway..."

Shadowkatt nods to you.

Shadowkatt says, "So he was being overrun by the enemy..."

Shadowkatt says, "Leya felt he was in trouble...and she called her horse..."

Shadowkatt says, "This was nae ordinary horse...I dont know what else to call it buta magical horse..."

Shadowkatt says, "and she headed to the battle..."

Shadowkatt says, "When she arrived she saw her love in the middle of a horde of these evil critters"

Shadowkatt says, "So..."

This is the scroll that was passed around.

It reads:
..nd it came to pass that the Goddess, in her great sorrow, built a black marble shrine, a monument to her desolation of spirit. Upon the altar, she placed the great sword given to her by her father, laying it down with the promise to never weild it again. In place of the mighty blade called Soulingen, she took to her a simple dagger, henceforth using it for all purposes that befell her. And taking on the humble robes of a common wanderer, she returned to the noble elves who had sheltered her in the sweet days of her innocence, retiring to the city in the trees to wait out her time.

End of the scroll.

Shadowkatt says, "She unsheathed Souligen and headed into the onset of the battle tofight aside her love..."

Shadowkatt says, "She swung in a rage...killing left and right..."

Shadowkatt says, "Until...."

(Shadowkatt pauses)

Shadowkatt says, "her love dead..."

Myste sobs.

Deepspring asks, "Oh, gads. She didn't kill him, did she?"

Morgaine gasps.

Morgaine's face turns slightly pale.

Suddenly, Bronnwyn bursts into tears!

Diandra gasps.

Shadowkatt says, "She, in her rage, had slain her love..."

(Danay puts her hand to her heart and looks unbearably sad)

A pained expression crosses Sylanae's face.

Deavon sighs.

Morgaine sobs.

Deepspring gasps.

Sylanae says, "Oh the poor dear"

Danay gasps.

Deepspring sobs.

Deavon sniffs.

Grobinal blinks.

Deavon says, "Such a said tale..."

Diandra says, "oh the deepest of pain"

Deepspring exclaims, "Oh, that's horrible!"

Suddenly, Diandra bursts into tears!

Myste sobs.

Danay asks, "do we know the name of her love?"

Shadowkatt says, "She vowed never again to take up the sword..."

Danay sniffs.

Bronnwyn says, "nae we do not"

Shadowkatt says, "nae"

Shadowkatt says, "Oh, i forgot something..."

Myste says, "no, we were not given his name"

Danay nods.

Danay sniffs.

Grobinal asks, "the swords name again shadowkatt was?"

Shadowkatt says, "When he left to go back to his people..."

Diandra says, "Souligen"

Shadowkatt says, "They were to meet on a certain day at a certain place at a certaintime..."

Shadowkatt says, "He never showed..."

Shadowkatt says, "Anyway..."

Shadowkatt says, "She went back to the spot and built her shrine..."

Deepspring sniffs.

Deepspring says, "That's so sad."

Shadowkatt says, "Upon a black marble altar she placed her sword, never to be touched again"

Morgaine asks, "the black marble shrine?"

Bronnwyn says, "ye know I was wondering about something about a part in this story"

Diandra says, "poor sweet goddess Leya and her deep torment"

Shadowkatt says, "It was a sword that could be touched by no mortal..."

Myste says, "so she lives a simple life, helping others"

Shadowkatt says, "She took up a simple dagger and retired to an Elven City."

Shadowkatt says, "That is the story Miriweather shared."

Bronnwyn says, "Miriweather said that when Leya left the forest on her horse that thegrounds shook"

Sylanae says, "an elven city.."

Shadowkatt nods.

Bronnwyn says, "She was nae supposed to leave there"

Bronnwyn asks, "I wonder... if that could have been her father Kai's anger?"

Deavon says, "Such a sad story... Our Lady must have lived in despair the rest ofher days"

Kythyn asks, "now, if I may?"

Morgaine asks, "do we know if Kai was opposed to this union?"

Myste says, "no"

Diandra says, "Ipray the gods gave her strength in her grief"

Bronnwyn says, "she was sent there by him to avoid such things"

Kythyn says, "The visitor did three other things of possible import"

Bronnwyn says, "so when she left the forest on her horse and the grounds shook"

Bronnwyn asks, "anyone spose that was kais anger?"

Deavon says, "I would think he would be pained, not angry as a result of this"

Kythyn says, "First, it seems clear that the rezzers have an unrelated problem withthe vvael"

Myste says, "they like to kill me"

Shadowkatt says, "Aye, but was nae only rezzers who were killed."

Kythyn says, "that is, unrelated to Leya"

Kythyn led us down to the brewery to find the Lady Miriweather inorder to get more info and here more of her wonderous stories of Leya.

[Helden Hall, Brewery]
The smells of hops and honeyed brew tantalize your senses, making your mouth water in anticipation. A small gnomish brewer draped in a huge apron anxiously bustles about checking the fermenting brew. Large fermenting vats take up most of the room and strange vials and testing containers cover the large table, while sacks of grain and small kegs of finished brew occupy a corner. The size of the vats attests to the thirst of the occupants of this house.

Afer finding Lady Miriweather, hiding behind some kegs we traveled to Helden's main hall, where food and drink awaited a most fantastical tale.

[Helden Hall, Great Hall]
Rushes are strewn across the floor of this enormous room with a lofty ceiling, and elaborate tapestries adorn the walls. Opposite the entrance is a raised dais dominated by a massive table overlooking scores of smaller tables. In the center of the Hall lies a large hearth providing warmth and light. A display case rests against the east wall, flanked by trophies of conquered beasts. Stairs lead up the north wall to a railed balcony. You also see some oaken doors, a serving maid, an archway, an embroidered tapestry, a wooden door and a grey steel door.

Bronnwyn asks, "so he was upset when she rode out?"

Geijon asks, "did evil seek to capture it because of those powers that it had of taking ones soul?"

Grobinal says, "i just had a horrible thought"

You ask, "well yah know i wonder what would happen if this so called sword was broken....would the souls it stole be released?"

Shadowkatt says, "I am thinking since she is only in the Elven city that she would not let her shrine get plundered."

Miriweather says, "Well, in those times, I thinks tha evil sought ta takes everthin"

Deepspring asks, "And I assume Leya's shrine had powerful protections placed on it, yes?"

Miriweather says, "I nae knows Deepspring"

Miriweather says, "Tha Shrine is said to house tha lady's sorrow"

Deavon says, "There seems to be a part of the mystery we do not know yet..."

Kythyn asks, "Milady Miriweather, might ye tell us of the Elven city?"

Deepspring says, "It must be a very large place then."

Danay asks, "Miriweather, did you say you knew how Leya came to posess the sword?"

Myste asks, "is it known if we can reach the shrine by normal means?"

Deavon asks, "If the shrine existed, what caused it to disappear?"

Shadowkatt says, "So many questions..."

Miriweather says, "Well.. tha old legends say twas given to her by Kai, for she saws it and fells in love with it"

Kythyn says, "aye let us be silent and allow our guest to speak"

Deepspring says, "Okay, I believe there are four questions."

Brutkc asks, "Milady the sorrow of Leya is a river of tears how can we aid her?"

Geijon says, "time often blurs history as its passed on and certain things are lost"

Grobinal asks, "but who was it sealed by?"

Deepspring asks, "First, can we get to Leya's shrine and is the sword still within?"

Myste asks, "didn't you say the sword would kill a mortal if they touched it?"

Deepspring asks, "Second, will Leya return from the elven city or can we somehow persuade her?"

Miriweather says, "Wells, twas said when I was but knee-high to a dwarf that the Shrine be hard ta finds, but oncet found, is open to all of gentle heart"

Deepspring says, "That is good to know."

Brutkc asks, "She is forever hidden from mortal kind?"

Deepspring asks, "And fourth, and most importantly, how can we ease Leya's pain and best serve her?"

Deavon says, "I have foresworm my life to tending her shrine, once it is found"

Miriweather says, "Well, thas why twas a favorite story ta tells youngins"

Grobinal asks, "can i take a wild guess here for the reason for her pain?"

You say, "she coulda sealed it herself afore she went to de elven city"

Deepspring says, "Please, tell us, Lady Miriweather."

Miriweather says, "Twas said she tole those tha saw her tha last, tha' she be best served by showing mercy to those who needs it"

Geijon asks, "is it possible the elven city holds some secrets to finding the shrine?"

Shadowkatt says, "Hmmm.."

Diandra says, "that is a worthy legacy"

Jorrdan says, "Then I served her well last night."

Danay says, "aye"

Grobinal says, "but the elvin kingdom was so huge at one time"

Deepspring says, "I am so saddened by the tale of Leya's life.....and still wish there was something more we could do for her...showing mercy is admirable, of course, and I will strive to do so, but...."

Miriweather says, "Well, I nae knows tha steps ye have taken"

Grobinal says, "they lived everywhere, many cities that i recall from the histories"

Kythyn asks, "Myste, might ye recount what we have done to date?"

Deepspring says, "We've traveled around the forests, looking for signs....."

Kythyn asks, "while the rest of us remain silent?"

Kythyn asks, "well, I seem to have struck her silent. Deavon?"

Myste says, "we have searched the landing and surrounding area, started looking atRR, and traveled to Ice Mule to find an area with ferns, a hill, forrest, and some ruins"

Kythyn says, "ahh there she is"

Kythyn asks, "and our visits to Kai?"

Myste says, "we were not able to enter a barrier of some kinds"

Deavon says, "I am just letting my mind wonder over the story... and the possibilities"

Miriweather says, "Why I was jus' there a small whiles ago"

Myste says, "had communed there on nights when I felt a pulse from the pendant I once had"

Deepspring asks, "You were recently at Kai's shrine, Lady Miriweather?"

Miriweather nods.

Grobinal says, "the barrier was ice and rubble"

Miriweather says, "Well I dunno.. tha legends does say tho.. tha way inta tha shrine be verra hard ta finds."

Deepspring asks, "Just....hard to find? Not...obscured by mists or something?"

Miriweather says, "Praps a time of followin' tha goddesses example, combined with a few prayers would turn tha trick"

Kythyn says, "When we are done here, I propose we adjourn to the roof and offer ourprayers"

Grobinal asks, "m'lady can ya tell us more of Leya's steed?"

Led to the rooftop of Helden in order to get some fresh air, and hear more of the Stories Miriweather spun, we relaxed.

The view from the top of the castle is breathtaking. As you step out onto the half-enclosed roof, you get the feeling of being on top of the world. A Wehnimer's flag flutters in the breeze atop the east towers, and a large cannon stands at the ready, its barrel pointed toward the sea. A large wooden tub sits in the center of the rooftop, filled to the brim with bubbling water. Obviously the guards who man this post enjoy their comfort during peaceful times. You also see a trapdoor.

Metaboculous says, "M'Lady yea are quiet safe here..and always welcome in our hall"

Miriweather smiles at Meta, still looking a bit worried.

(My note: Believe it or not, it's not until this point with another of her "special" actions that it finally really sinks in with me that we've been talking to a character run by a GM. I'd had no experience with that sort of thing so I was a bit slow on the uptake!)

Miriweather asks, "Erry more questions afore I takes ta bed this even?"

Kythyn says, "One milady"

Grobinal asks, "the name of the steed?"

Metaboculous says, "ye have not to worry in our home.. Tis a home of family...not blood shed... No harm shall come to ye...that I'll make sure of"

From out in the street, you hear a voice yelling 'Kai's is opened.. it's opened!" The voice, obviously of a small lad, dwindles off as he runs on down the steet.

Kythyn says, "Two, should ye locate anything truly significant, give us all time to plan and gather before attempting anything precipitous"

Deavon says, "Perhaps we should go and offer our thanks and prayers, and nothing more"

Sylanae says, "This is one of the most entertaining evenings I've had in a long time"

Bronnwyn asks, "aye but how do we know when shes ready to do more story telling?"

And as we found that Kai's shrine was open once again, we adjorned to that place to offer many prayers to Leya.

Snow white vultite walls tower high overhead in this eight-sided room, their enormous size dwarfing only slightly the magnificent granite statue that stands in the center of the structure. Softly colored light filters in from huge stained glass windows set into each wall, creating a kaleidoscope of color dancing across the rich grey slate floors.

And as we left the shrine of Kai...Deavon leaving behind a siren lizard skin and Danay leaving a ritual dagger both as gifts to the goddess Leya..This is what happened.
