I'm not sure what started the Spitfire Craze on this occasion. Maybe it was just some GM's having some fun who started the whole thing. Whatever the case, when I logged into the game that day the Landing was abuzz with rumors of the Spitfire being sighted. People were swarmed at the docks and then at some point the rumor came the Spit was heading to Teras. So Katt and I ran around like crazy to prepare to make the trip, as the Glaesen Star was docked and near departure time. We figured even if it was just a rumor, it was worth making the trip for the fun of it anyway.

This is heavily edited of course. I always hate to have to make this statement. All the well-known characters talking and acting in this log are the originals.

[Wehnimer's, North Dock]
The dock's planks are dull and weathered from the salt spray of many seasons. As you gaze north across the dark blue waters of Darkstone Bay, you see a flock of ice geese silhouetted against the sky. The hulk of a derelict coastal sailer is tethered to the end of the pier. You also see a blue gate framed by a tall stockade wall, a stack of empty crates and the dock foreman.

[Wehnimer's, Locksmehr Way]
The way follows the natural bend in the river, which encroaches slightly inland here. To the west, a lane leads off into the business and warehouse districts of the Landing. From the east, the shrieking of seabirds and the groaning of tall ships straining at the anchor reach your ears. You also see the Wehnimer's Exchange booth and the South Wharf.

Dockworkers curse you and each other as they carry their loads from the great trade ships to the warehouses of Wehnimer's Landing. Intermixed with the dockworkers are the crews of ships from various exotic and faraway ports. You also see a gangplank, a burly dwarven dockhand, the Glaesen Star and the Glaesen Star ticket office.

[Wehnimer Travel Office]
This ticket office appears to be nothing more than a remodelled fishing shack. On one of the unevenly boarded walls is a mural of some island scene, beneath which a slogan reads, "Teras Isle: Voyages Daily!" You also see a curtained partition, a ticket clerk and a voyage schedule.

"Yes m'lady, this 'ere ship sails 'tween Wehnimer's Landing and the town of Kharam-Dzu on Teras Isle. It's a pretty good leg of a trip, so the price is 50000 silvers, one way. Return trip's free, though."

To purchase a ticket, have your money in pocket or in your right hand and type BUY TICKET again within 30 seconds.

The clerk hands you a Glaesen Star ticket. "Be sure to look that over."

[Upper Deck 'Midships]
Hollystoned to the color of pale honey, the oak planking here in the waist of the vessel stretches from the base of the forecastle to the break of the aftcastle. The expanse of deck is interrupted by the polished ashwood-and-glaes mass of the main capstan, the white glaes gratings of the two main cargo hatches, and the base of the main mast. From here ladders lead up to the aftcastle deck, the fo'csle castle deck forward, and down to the maindeck below. J>You wipe the sweat from your brow.

J>You say, "Whew that was close."

J>Gullman says, "Seeing as the ink is still wet on my title papers.. I figger they be easy hunting fer me"

J>Gullman winks.

J>You poke Gullman in the ribs.

J>Shadowkatt says, "Folks on Teras have no idea whats about to land..."

J>Shadowkatt smirks.

J>You chuckle at Shadowkatt.

J> The First Mate cries to the Captain, "Beware the jolly roger, Captain! Ship sighted off the bow this evening!"

J> You hear the captain shout, "Cast off fore and aft!"

J>Falgrin exclaims, "ship sighted!"

J>Mayko says, "I wonder if it's a krolvin slave ship.."

J>Silvertre exclaims, "Finally, a chance to see the world!"

J>Kinshack asks, "Did you hear that?"

J> The ship drifts away from the dock, born down river by the current and the ebbing tide.

J>Scallawag says, "uhhh no.. we'd sink with anymore people"

J>(Gullman peers off the starboard)

J>Belgerann says, "they sure picked da wrong day to try and board dis boat."

J>Gullman tightens his grip on his elven longsword.

J>Gullman scowls.

J>You say, "Oh gads, I am sure I forgot something important in all the rush."

J> Gullman asks, "Like money?"

J>Gullman just tickled you.

J>You say, "Nay I did remember that."

J>Kinshack says, "Never seen this many people crammed into this deck."

J>You wink at Gullman.

J>Kinshack yawns.

J>Gullman grins.

J>Haelra nods to Kinshack.

J>Kinshack says, "You can't possibly tell me you're just here for the 'ambiance'"

J>Kinshack snickers.

Gullman says, "It's sweltering down 'ere.."

J>Kinshack says, "You're chasing the Spitfire, just like the other half of us."

J>Gullman says, "I headed up to get sum fresh sea air..."

J>Lord Gullman climbed up the fo'csle ladder.

J>Healtoucher says, "hehe watch us get halfway across the water and see the spitfire pass us going back"

J>Scallawag begins chuckling at Healtoucher.

J>You say, "This is only my second trip. It has been years since I was there."

(Note: This was back when character age was tied to level, so even though it had actually only been one RL year, sometimes in character terms I phrased things as many years to reflect the passage of age and time. Pretty awkward way to do things, which is why it was changed.)

J>Scallawag says, " we movin yet.. can't seem to find the edge of the ship with alla people"

J>Haelra says, "I'd just left yesterday to move back for a few years"

J>You ask, "Back to the Landing?"

The harbor guard towers slide past, the spar of the main yard missing the sloping roofs by just a hands-breadth or two on either side.

J> (Danay leans on the rail and watches the town pass by)

J> The ship begins a more pronounced rise and fall as she passes from the sheltered waters of the harbor to the open waters of the bay.

J>You say, "Might as well get comfortable I guess."

J>You sit down.

sJ>A voice cries out from the crow's nest, "Clear Sailing ahead!"

sJ>Kinshack says, "Cemb, Shar wants to destroy the Landing."

(Kinshack had been questioning Cemb on why he was wearing a symbol for Shar and Cemb had replied because he felt like it, just like his Voln symbol.)

sJ> You lean back.

sJ>Kinshack says, "She's a whole lot different than Voln."

sJ>You nod to Kinshack.

"Port tack! Brace up the yards!" shouts the captain, and the crew haul on ropes to swing the yards around so the sails catch the west wind.

sJ>Kinshack says, "That stands against everything you've pledged to as a Gryphon."

sJ>Sophokles says, "I think that is a noble goal, Kinshack"

sJ>Cemb says, "Voln will destroy the landing as well"

sJ>Kinshack says, "Good for you Sophokles."

sJ>Cemb snorts at Kinshack.

sJ>Kinshack says, "You should ask Cemb for his symbol then."

sJ>Sophokles says, "Please let me know how I can help"

sJ>The captain calls out, "Be on the lookout! Pirates reported on the high seas!"

sJ>Mayko says, "Ahh, so there are pirates."

sJ>You ask, "Pirates?"

sJ>Merridina shudders.

sJ>Jeylonna says, "who put me on the boat"

sJ>Jeylonna wails!

sJ>(Danay glances around)

sJ>Sorchia cackles!

sJ>Sorchia leans on you.

sJ>You smile at Sorchia.

sJ>You say, "Look what the dwarfs dragged in."

sJ>Healtoucher exclaims, "Come on pirates you can't beat me!"

sJ>Lord Gullman climbed down the fo'csle ladder.

sJ>Gullman smiles merrily.

sJ>Gullman says, "What a day, friends!!! "

sJ>Gullman exclaims, "Kin ye smell the fresh sea air...!!"

Kinshack says, "Cemb, someone who supports Shar is as good as a traitor, please be aware of that."

sJ>Gullman pulls you to your feet.

J>You nod to Gullman.

J>Gullman says, "It fills me... Been a LONG time...."

J>Sorchia says, "wait till i git my hands on Teras"

Gullman beams!

As more sail is set the press of wind against canvas makes the ship heel more and more to starboard.

Gullman says, "FEEL the motion of the waves... The sea breeze as we move along with it.."

J>A tart comes sailing over the rail and hits Healtoucher squarely in the forehead.
Crumbs fall down onto the deck.

J> Gullman throws his head back and howls!

J>Gullman says, "Come what may... Tis a fine day.. and fine company..."

J>Merridina exclaims, "yay!!!"

J>Mayko laughs!

J> Merridina exclaims, "It's raining tarts!!!!"

J>Healtoucher exclaims, "I'm part of the Dragon Assasins if you pirates mess with me me and my blood brother will have revenge!"

J>You hear the voice of Gwalmachei say, "Aye Gullman, that it is"

J>(Merridina looks up for a tart to catch.)

J>Gullman asks, "Gwal!! Ye old ranger!! Bet ye seasick, eh?"

J>You hear the voice of Gwalmachei say, "nothing like a pleasant cruise to stimulate the appetite"

J>Gullman cackles!

J>Mayko picks up some tart crumbs.

J>You say, "I am feeling a bit woozy."

J>Gullman asks, "Ever been this far from the trees, friend?"

J>(Merridina reaches up for a tart to sail by.)

J> You hear the voice of Gwalmachei say, "hey, remember, I'm half Ashrim, I love the open ocean"

J>Gullman rubs you gently.

J>A voice cries out from the crow's nest, "Black sails ahoy!"

J>Gullman exclaims, "Indeed!!"

J>Gullman exclaims, "A sea-elf!"

J>Gullman exclaims, "Black sails!!"

J>You hear the voice of Thomasl say, "Pirates~"

J>Gullman snarls menacingly!

Merridina starts jumping around like a twelve-year-old.

J>Daerkiss exclaims, "black sails!"

J>Gullman removes an ancient elven longsword from inside his rolaren-clasped cloak.

J>Daerkiss exclaims, "yes!"

Gullman slings a heavy grey shield glazed with diamond dust off from over his shoulder.

J>Merridina exclaims, "tarts, tarts!!"

"Sail, ho!" comes the cry from aloft, "Looks to be krolvin! Sail's a white slash on black!"

"GOOD EYES, BUT USE YOUR BRAIN, LAD!" calls the captain, "WHERE AWAY?"

"Um, off the starboard quarter, sir!" comes the sheepish reply.

"Fine then!" shouts the captain, "We've nothing to fear from them with this wind!"

J>Shadowkatt says, "Something is going on..."

Gullman exclaims, "Let us prepare!!"

J>Healtoucher exclaims, "load the cannons!"

J>Gullman exclaims, "To the starboard!!"

J>Healtoucher yells, "Fire! one!"

J>Healtoucher gestures.
A flare leaves Healtoucher's hand and shoots up into the sky where it hangs for a few moments before exploding into a breathtaking array of colors. The sheer brightness of the image before you lingers in your sight for several seconds after the explosion can no longer be seen.

J>Sophokles says, "Pirates are chicken"

>You shift your weight.

J>A voice cries out from the crow's nest, "OFF THE PORT BOW SIR!"

J>Gullman says, "Egads"

J> Gullman asks, "Both sides??"

J>Mayko says, "Ehm.."

J>Matubaa says, "Ummm.."

J>Merridina says, "hmmm.. this is unusual."

J>Gullman says, "Or we crossing their path"

J> (Danay watches the sails of the nearby ships)

J>You fidget.

J>Gullman throws his head back and howls!

J> Matubaa exclaims, "Krolvin invaders!"

J>You hear the voice of Daerkiss say, "perhaps we can board and shop as we sail"

A voice cries out from the crow's nest, "NO PENNANT YET SIR!"

J>Percilus exclaims, "come get us!"

>Llaedra asks, "we're being chased?"

J>Belgerann says, "whatch it be da spitfire."

J>Shadowkatt stands up.

J>Belgerann says, "jes' you watch."

Cemb asks, "No pennant yet?"

J>(Silvertre opens his eyes and wakes up.)

J> "Land ho!" comes a shout from the masthead, "Northern headland of th' bay off th' port bow!"

J> You remove a dull black longsword from inside your threaded war harness.

J>You sling a black vultite shield fire-branded with the image of a glowing dagger off from over your shoulder.

J>You shift your weight.

J>Cemb asks, "A voice from the crows nest?"

J>Belgerann says, "we gettin boarded by hafflin piwates."

J> "Haul of haul!" shouts the captain, "Stand by to come about!"

J>Belgerann says, "i wanna see dat."

J>A series of black sails appears on the horizon.

>Mekyl says, "black sails"

J>Matubaa says, "Black sails"

Mayko shivers.

Percilus exclaims, "spitfire!"

J>Matubaa exclaims, "Oh no!"

J>Mayko says, "O course.."

J>Silverthreaded says, "damn black sails"

J>Mayko says, "Since I see them.."

J>Percilus yells, "spitfire!"

J>Merridina says, "black sails again."

J>Kinshack blinks.

J> "Helm a-lee! Let go the headsheets!" shouts the captain.

J>Matubaa says, "Please oh please don't be krolvin"

J>Belgerann rubs his chin thoughtfully.

J>Cemb exclaims, "Oho!"

J>Mayko begins chuckling at Matubaa.

J> Gullman says, "This captain knows what he's doing"

J>You shift your weight.

J>Healtoucher growls ferociously!

Belgerann says, "oh no. not Krolvin."

J>Gwalmachei says, "brace yourselves folks"

Crew members work quickly to haul the ship's yards around as the bow swings from northwest to southwest. As the yards are turned in succession the sails fill with the west wind and the ship leans under the press of canvas. The Glaesen Star surges ahead on her new course.

J>Lackenberge yells, "Okay you lily libbered lubbers! Bring it on Krolvin"

J> Gullman tightens his grip on his elven longsword.

J>Silvertre growls ferociously!

J>Lackenberge's entire body tenses as he tightens his grip on his curved falchion.

J>A large ship starts approaching.

J>You hear the voice of Falgrin exclaim, "bah... lets fight!"

J>Gullman says, "Egads"

J>Shaalnor says, "Oh ho"

J>You exclaim, "There it is!"

J>Cemb exclaims, "Oh boy!"

J>Percilus says, "oh my"

Mekyl says, "wow"

J>(Merridina points at the ship.)

J>Gullman exclaims, "here it comes!"

J>Healtoucher exclaims, "its appraoching!"

J>Muren says, "Spitfire gonna ram us"

J>Muren's face turns slightly pale.

J>Silvertre says, "i'm a dead sorcie."

J> As the 'Star settles on her new heading the press of canvas makes her heel as far to port as she did to starboard earlier.

J>A voice cries out from the crow's nest, "No Pennant sir - she flies no flag!"

>Lackenberge yells, "You on the large ship...show yer hide"

>Gwalmachei says, "aye, running before the wind, nothing like it"

>Healtoucher exclaims, "no flag!"

>Gullman exclaims, "No flag... Pirates indeed!!"

>Silvertre gulps.

>Mayko exclaims, "C'mon midjits!"

>Gullman exclaims, "Keep ye feet, friends!!!"

>Thomasl says, "Insults, must be the spit"

>Gullman says, "We WILL prevail!"

Shadowkatt removes a dull black glaes scythe from inside her weapons harness.

> (Merridina looks over the rails.)

> Kinshack says, "They're halflings, they're too fun loving to attack us..."

>Shadowkatt slings a battered black tower shield off from over her shoulder.

> A verdant island crowned by a smoking volcano slides slowly over the horizon ahead. As the ship sails on you can discern a second mountain south of the first and the mouth of a river just north of the stationary felstorm.

>Haelra says, "Ah, home sweet home"

>The great ship pulls along side, over a hundred bloodthirsty faces staring over the rail.

"Helm a-lee! Let go the headsheets!" shouts the captain, and the helmsman spins the wheel to turn the ship across the wind.

Hollystoned to the color of pale honey, the oak planking here in the waist of the vessel stretches from the base of the forecastle to the break of the aftcastle. The expanse of deck is interrupted by the polished ashwood-and-glaes mass of the main capstan, the white glaes gratings of the two main cargo hatches, and the base of the main mast. From here ladders lead up to the aftcastle deck, the fo'csle castle deck forward, and down to the maindeck below. You also see a badly damaged modwir trunk, an acid-pitted mithril box, some wolifrew lichen, some sovyn clove, some cactacae spine, the Reigoki disk, the Partrane disk, the Healtoucher disk, the galley door and the aftcastle door.

Crew members work frantically to haul the ship's yards around as the bow swings from southwest to northwest. As the swirling maelstrom of blackness seems sure to envelop the ship, her bow swings toward the wide river mouth to the west, and the howling madness of the felstorm slides past the port beam and then around to the stern.

>A hail of burned tarts flies onto the deck hurled by the challengers.

> The crew seems to relax and breaths a collective sigh of relief. As the yards are turned in succession the sails fill and the ship heels under the press of canvas and surges ahead on the new course.

>Merridina says, "bet Jezebelly made that baker walk the plank."

>Matubaa whimpers.

>Kilaya chuckles.

Dark cliffs rise sharply to port, the felstorm clinging to their seaward face. Drear and forbidding, rather than majestic, the vegetation that covers everything else seems to avoid it. Several dark openings near the cliffs' summit remind you of catacombs or of the empty eyesockets of skulls.

>A voice bellows from the other ship, "Git ya next time Cap'n! Stand by to come about!"

>You hear the voice of Matubaa exclaim, "Ack!"

>You exclaim, "We won!"

>Haelra says, "No"

A solid wall of greenery crowds down to the river's edge to starboard. The verdant rise of a ridgeline to the north is only broken by a stone road that parallels the river.

>Thomasl exclaims, "they runnin!"

>You hear the voice of Matubaa say, "They comein' back about"

Cemb chuckles.

>Cemb says, "The star is built for speed."

>You hear the voice of Matubaa ask, "Arn't they?"

>A colorful flare rises into the air high above the town of Kharam-Dzu.

You hear the voice of Matubaa say, "I can't see from under this plank"

Ahead the river bends to the south, and the captain shouts orders for the crew to turn the ship.

Above the ridgeline to the north, the smoking peak of the volcano can be seen, and bright flecks of molten lava flash briefly against the dark stone of its lower slopes.

>Haelra nods.

>Cemb says, "I'd be surprised if they could beet it"

>Shadowkatt says, "Watch em go back ta the landing."

>Shadowkatt snickers.

>The Spitfire drops sail, slowing in the wake of the Glaesen Star.

>Kinshack chuckles.

>You chuckle at Shadowkatt.

>Kilaya nods to Shadowkatt.

>You hear someone chuckling.

>Haelra throws her head back and howls!

>Merridina says, "ah.. they gave up."

> As the ship sails south up the river, canyon walls close in along either bank. The roofs of houses peek above stone walls between the canyon walls ahead, and the southern mountain rises close behind them.

>Kilaya exclaims, "The Star will beat 'em back there too!"

>You hear the voice of Shaalnor say, "Where're you all hiding? I'm behind the mast"

>Muren says, "Ha"

>Muren snorts.

(Matubaa jumps up and down, thumbing his nose at your defeated ship!)

> "Furl the main course! Lets get some of the way off her!" you hear the captain shout, and his voice echoes off the canyon walls.

> (Merridina runs to the back of the boat, looking for tarts.)

Sailing through the town itself, a dwarven rock garden slides by on the port side. To starboard, the ship passes a wharf stacked high with barrels and casks of every imaginable size, marking the building beyond it as a brewery.

>Healtoucher says, "or is it I'm a wimp and couldn't hide in a pitch black room"

>The Jolly Roger unfurls off the rapidly shrinking ship as it falls off into a starboard tack.

>Shadowkatt grins.

>Matubaa fidgets.

> Ahead on the port bank stands a magnificent, pearl-grey building inlaid with gold and crimson glaes.

>Kinshack chuckles.

>Merridina says, "ah.. it's going away."

>Matubaa exclaims, "We won!"

>Matubaa raises his fist defiantly.

>Kilaya cackles!

> The river splits around an island directly ahead, and the captain gives orders to take the western fork. The crew competently turns the ship, bringing it past a massive grey stone building on the east bank.

>You say, "Now watch, they will not dock here."

>Shaalnor asks, "Are we just outrunning it, or has it changed course?"

>Mayko raises her black rolaren longsword in triumph!

> The shipping and docks are visible ahead, but a tall tower on the island to the east draws the eye: it stands like a sentinel above the surrounding town.

Healtoucher asks, "Okay where do we get our trophy?"

>Kinshack chuckles.

The captain shouts orders, and mooring lines snake out from workers upon the dock to waiting crewmen aboard. The ship slows as the last sails are furled, and the mooring lines are drawn taut and securely fastened.

>You ask, "This is where we unload in sand devils, right Katt?"

> You lean on Shadowkatt.

>Haelra laughs!

>Shadowkatt snickers.

(On my first trip to Teras on the boat on the way over Katt told me that we had to unload in sand devils and siren lizards and run through in order to get to town. I'd bought it at first, but then she started elaborating a bit too much so I finally realized she was joking.)

Clanging bells, steam whistles and hoarse dwarven shouts crowd the air of this busy port. Squat ferryboats wallow in from a gaping hole in the mountain just to the south. They are piled high with lumps of raw ore and pick-bearing dwarves. A large building to the northwest belches forth great clouds of black soot, and everything here has a layer of grime. A swirling grey-blue mist slowly fills the area. It begins to spin faster and faster, congealing into a large upright disk. The mist slows its spinning and within the swirling vapors you can make out an opening.

Bestatte leans on Quavvy.

J>Starsnuffer points at a swirling mist.

J> Rhaindrop grins.

J>You see Hammibal stick his head into the swirling mist.

J>You see Shaalnor stick his head into the swirling mist.

J>You chuckle at Starsnuffer.

Haelra smirks.

J>Hammibal says, "Eesh"

J>Haelra says, "Put them in Elementals"

J>Hanzle laughs!

Kinshack grins.

J>Matubaa asks, "What's the mist?"

J>As you gaze into the swirling mist you see...

Only a thick layer of ash on the floor insulates your feet against the intense heat of the cavern, as smoke and steam still seeps up through it. A small cracking noise comes from the floor beneath you, the soot covering the ground keeps you from being able to see where it might have cooled unevenly or where it might be thin from the heat. You can only hope that your weight allows you to traverse the area without incident. You also see a fire elemental, a red tsark, a lava golem, a swirling mist and a calico cat which appears dead.
Obvious exits: south, northwest, southwest.

A bolt of energy leaps from the swirling mist to the ground. The swirling mist begins to speed up as it spirals back into the opening and fades away.

J>Gulath says, "Alot of us are lieng down.."

J>Suddenly Kinshack appears in the room holding onto a ring he has just placed on his finger.

J> Kinshack chuckles.

J>Starsnuffer smiles at Kinshack.
