The Really Huge Troll

9/16/02

This is yet another chapter in the ongoing saga of Most Embarassing Deaths. I had wandered to Hearthstone to look for company and Nofret was telling fortunes there.

[Hearthstone, Front Porch]
Airy and open, the porch is enclosed by smooth, freshly painted white modwir up to a height of about four feet. As you ponder the sky-blue color of the ceiling and a lacework of deep green ivy that crisscrosses the open space between posts, the hubbub of the world beyond quickly fades away. Rocking chairs of various sizes are an inviting sight, and an elegant marble arch provides a tantalizing view of the splendors inside the old manor. You also see the Violenttmoon disk, a long oak sideboard with some stuff on it, an elegant green marble arch, a doorman, the porch steps, a wooden sign and a wheeled brass serving cart with some stuff on it.
Also here: Priscius, High Lady Kadesha, Kraniak who is seated, Violenttmoon who is seated, Aranrhod who is seated, Sylviana, Vorlash who is seated, Nofret who is seated, Lady Keraa who is seated
Obvious paths: none.

>You take a drink from your sylvan brandy.

>Kadesha says, "thanks again for the reading"

>You see Vorlash Zul'ander.
He appears to be a Dark Elf.
He appears to be ancient. He has tilted silver eyes and dark skin. He has shoulder length, silver hair worn in elaborate braids. He has slightly downswept pointed ears.
He has a pipe clenched between his teeth.
He has a swollen left eye, and minor bruises about the head.
He is holding a belt pouch in his right hand.
He is wearing a soot-covered kodera shield, some heavy black silk robes, a dreamstone spider pin, a hammered gold flask, a shimmering glaesine orb, some black silver-edged breeches, a pair of gold-rimmed spectacles, a shadowy black weapons harness, a black spidersilk cloak, a sigil-etched black pearl necklace, a silver tooled wrist sheath, a silver dwarven wand belt, some leather boots, a moonstone inset bronze pendant, a silver ruby-eyed skull clasp, a string of vaalorn etched crystal beads encircled with crimson sigils, a dark night hound handpuppet, and a crystal amulet.

>Kraniak thoughtfully asks, "Nofret--do you have a license from Moot Hall practice this dubious trade of yours?"

>Sylviana asks, "Dubious?"

>You ask, "Since when do they license fortunetellers?"

>Sylviana raises an eyebrow.

>Nofret says, "Well...Celtic has never complained about the additional revenue it brings in."

>Kadesha begins chuckling at Kraniak.

>Kraniak winks.

>Vorlash points at Kraniak.

>Nofret asks, "Danay or Kraniak, would you like your fortune told?"

>Vorlash says, "he's next"

>Kraniak thoughtfully says, "sure.."

>Kraniak thoughtfully says, "I think"

>Vorlash hugs his knees and sways side to side.

>You say, "Eh...nay. If it was bleak I would not want to know it, now that things have finally gotten better."

>Danay smiles ruefully.

>Nofret says, "That, I understand all too well."

>Vorlash says, "that's ok, you're next"

>Vorlash hums distractedly to himself.

>Nofret nods.

>Vorlash winks at you.

>Nofret says, "Let's see, Kraniak..."

>Kraniak thoughtfully says, "Im sure mine wil portend good things..."

>Aranrhod whispers, "He has a dead mouse."

>Kadesha peers quizzically at Vorlash.

>Vorlash sighs.

>whis aran So I see!You whisper quietly to Aranrhod.

>Kadesha asks, "why don't you bury that?"

>Vorlash glances at Kadesha.

>Kraniak glances at Vorlash.

>Kadesha says, "gonna start smellin bad"

>Vorlash asks, "would you bury Keraa?"

>Kraniak thoughtfully asks, "start?"

>Nofret says, "In a world where the dead are raised daily, he hopes to have the mouse resurrected, I think."

>Keraa laughs!

>Keraa says, "I am not dead yet"

>Kadesha tries to pull Keraa towards her.

>Vorlash nods to Nofret.

>Nofret nods.

>Vorlash says, "kiss a magru, you'll fix that in short order"

>Kadesha says, "well.. I don think I can save a mouse"

>Nofret smiles as she reaches into her greatcloak, withdraws a leather bag, and shakes it vigorously.

>Kraniak thoughtfully says, "I trust the stones the most..."

>(Nofret opens the bag and shakes out three runes. She lays them out, face down and side by side.)

>(Nofret studies the runes with immense concentration. You gaze at the runes, but they only look like the stick pictures that children draw.)

>Kraniak thoughtfully says, "more direct I think."

>Kraniak carefully braids his beard.

>You see Kraniak Budgroer the Skald.
He appears to be a Giantman of the Arctic Clan.
He appears to be mature and tall. He has deep-set steel grey eyes and tanned skin. He has receding, tied back red hair with grey at the temples. He has a weathered face, a classical nose and broad shoulders.
He has a braided red beard, and a silver harp tattoo on his forearm.
He has several painful-looking scars across his abdominal area.

>You take a drink from your sylvan brandy.
That was the last drop.
You set the brandy aside.

>Shaykee just slid into view.

>You hear someone laugh.

>Shaykee snores quietly.

>Kadesha blinks at Shaykee.

>Kadesha leans against Shaykee and gets a quick little wink in return.

>Shaykee grins.

>Nofret recites:

"Ger can represent pregnancy or other forms of fruitfulness--such as creativity or ideas--and is especially indicative of the cycles of providence--- that which has been sown is now being reaped. This rune can also represent the cycles of wealth, for crops are often a sign of wealth."

>Nofret nods to Kraniak.

>You ponder.

> * Laze just bit the dust!

>cast lazeYou gesture into the air.
Your vision begins to become murky and clouded. You have a sensation of rapidly passing distance. Eventually your sight begins to clear and a vision of Laze's surroundings fills your mind...

[Wehntoph, Northern Slopes]
A huge wall of timber has been dragged here, stopping any further passage upward. Thunderous footsteps nearby rattle the trunks, causing a few wild birds to take flight. You also see a gas cloud and a thunder troll.

Incredible blast shatters your head into a red spray.

It seems you have died, my friend. Although you cannot do anything, you are keenly aware of what is going on around you...

You mentally give a sigh of relief as you remember that the Goddess Lorminstra owes you a favor.

...departing in 10 mins...

The thunder troll howls in triumph!

A wind witch claws at your eyes unmercifully!

DEAD> * Danay just bit the dust!

DEAD>You mutter, complaining bitterly about your state of affairs.

DEAD>Suddenly you have the strangest feeling that you are being watched.
The feeling fades as quickly as it came.

DEAD>You say, "Well that is embarassing."

DEAD>A cloud of dense silvery fog suddenly appears. The fog quickly dissipates to reveal Wintersin.

DEAD>A cloud of dense silvery fog suddenly appears. The fog quickly dissipates to reveal Kiol.

DEAD>Wintersin gestures.
Your surroundings blur for a moment . . .

[Wehnimer's, Outside Gate]
Citizens, merchants and assorted dregs of society jostle against you before the great wooden gates of Wehnimer's Landing. Harried guards and militiamen try to keep the chaos to a minimum, but it is hard to keep track of those entering, let alone leaving, this large trading post. A dirt path encircling the wooden palisade of the town leads east and southwest. Nailed prominently to the wooden wall beside the gate is a sign you really should read. You also see a rolton, a simple haon coffer, a rolton pelt, a Wayside Inn and a large wooden structure.
Also here: the body of Laze who is lying down, Lord Wintersin, Drakam
Obvious paths: north, east, northwest, southwest.

DEAD>You hear the ghostly voice of Laze exclaim, "Danay!"

DEAD>The ghost of Laze whispers, "Teach me to leave the room to go to the bathroom."

DEAD>Wintersin says, "dang Kiol fogged in just as i was going out"

Suddenly you have the strangest feeling that you are being watched.
The feeling fades as quickly as it came.

DEAD>Suddenly you have the strangest feeling that you are being watched.

DEAD>whis laze Teach me to rescue with no armor and only a shield out!

DEAD>An unsettling groan comes from the spirit of Laze.

> DEAD>Wintersin gestures.
A sense of peace and calm settles over the area.

DEAD>High Lady Kadesha's group just arrived.

DEAD> You say, "I do not want the help of Kiol anyway."

DEAD>Kadesha gestures at you.
You feel a tingle on your soul, as if a powerful hand is gently cradling it.

DEAD>Shaykee glances at you.

DEAD>You say, "Thank you Kadesha."

DEAD>Kadesha pokes you to see if you'll move.

DEAD>Kadesha asks, "see what happens ya leave us?"

DEAD>Shaykee says, "amazin how tings change so quickly"

DEAD>You say, "Aye I would be honored. But I think Laze should get help first."

DEAD>You say, "She was dead first."

DEAD>You sigh softly, your ghostly voice a mere breath on the wind.

DEAD>You exclaim, "You would think I could stop making stupid mistakes by now!"

DEAD>Shaykee looks over at you and shakes his head.

DEAD>Kadesha looks over at you and shakes her head.

DEAD>You hear the ghostly voice of Laze say, "You? Try standing in front of a cloud and ignoring it."

DEAD>You mutter, complaining bitterly about your state of affairs.

DEAD>You hear the ghostly voice of Laze exclaim, "Stupid, stupid cloud!"

DEAD>Shaykee says, "only gits worser as we age"

DEAD>Kadesha asks, "I havent yet, why should you?"

DEAD>You ask, "Got it?"

DEAD>Kadesha nods to you.

DEAD>Shaykee nods to you.

DEAD>Wintersin chuckles.

DEAD>Shaykee chuckles.

DEAD>Shaykee says, "man, that troll was huge"

DEAD>Kadesha gestures.
A brilliant light bathes you as your surroundings blur for a moment...

[Sanctuary]
A grey, swirling mist surrounds you, its tendrils creeping around your feet and twisting into a thick, translucent mass that vaguely forms a curved wall around the chamber. A feeling of calmness and protection passes over you as you sense that nothing harmful may pass the swirling walls.
Also in the room: the body of Laze who is lying down, High Lady Kadesha, Shaykee
Obvious exits: out.

DEAD>Kadesha touches Laze.

DEAD>.You say, "Could not be much worse than what just happened."

DEAD>Kadesha gestures at Laze.
Kadesha suddenly looks very drained.

A bolt of soft white light streaks down from the sky bathing Laze in it.

> A brilliant glow forms around Laze, lingers for a moment, and finally fades. Laze awakens looking somewhat confused and seriously drained.
Laze seems slightly different.

DEAD>You say, "I seriously underestimated my defending abilities with only a shield."

DEAD>You say, "And er, well a pretty shirt instead of armor helps little."

DEAD>Laze blinks.

DEAD>Laze says, "I've never awakened to a ceiling of mists before."

DEAD>Laze asks, "Where am I this time?"

DEAD>You give a ghostly chuckle.

DEAD>Laze rubs her eyes.

DEAD>Kadesha smiles at Laze.

DEAD>Laze sits up.

DEAD>Laze winces.

DEAD>Laze says, "I think I did that too fast."

DEAD>You say, "Kadesha had the spirits create a sanctuary for us."

DEAD>Shaykee rubs Laze.

DEAD>Kadesha asks, "Danay shall I drag yas back to the porch?"

Laze blinks at you.

DEAD>Shaykee chuckles.

DEAD>Laze blinks at Shaykee.

DEAD>You say, "Erm...well you can if you like."

DEAD>You say, "Then I could make an even more interesting entrance than Shaykee."

DEAD>Kadesha says, "or can stay here an enjoy the pretty mists"

DEAD>Laze asks, "Can you wake Danay?"

DEAD>Kadesha grins at you.

DEAD>Shaykee points at Kadesha.

DEAD>Laze says, "I hear her voice, but she seems to have passed out."

DEAD>You say, "I will when Kadesha has recovered."

DEAD>You say, "Let us go ahead and go back, I can enjoy the stars that way at least."

DEAD>Kadesha nods to you.

DEAD>A bright light surrounds you and your visions of sanctuary slowly fade...

DEAD Kadesha moves to stand in front of Laze.

DEAD>Kadesha glances at a rolton.

DEAD> Kadesha grabs your body and drags it north with her.
[A Quiet Path]
The trail here is littered with blackened remnants of battle. The slightly scarred roof of Hearthstone Manor is visible just further north, a bit weathered but still looking intact. You also see a rolton, a roped-off clearing, a grey stone walkway and a shaded path.
Also here: High Lady Kadesha

DEAD> Kadesha grabs your body and drags it north with her.
[Hearthstone, Courtyard]
Before you stands a grand old manor, framed by huge willows to the east and west. The elegant trees sway gently in the moonlight, dappling the cobblestone courtyard with ever-shifting patterns of light and dark. Snippets of conversation drift away from the long porch stretching along the full width of the great old house, as several guests enjoy the hospitality and ambience of this fine hideaway. You also see the porch steps and a hollow tree stump.

Rocking chairs of various sizes are an inviting sight, and an elegant marble arch provides a tantalizing view of the splendors inside the old manor. Kadesha suddenly looks very drained.

You feel a sudden jolt of nothing short of the raw power of divine intervention. For some reason, you cannot bring yourself to move quite yet, but feel relieved nonetheless.
You feel the touch of the hand leave your soul.

>You say, "I will be right back."

>The doorman smiles and says, "Welcome back Lady Danay!"
