Jantalar and the Mandis Crystal

This log is from 1/7/98.

This was back when we thought Jantalar could be invading in the spring, which never happened. The storyline petered out a while after this and didn't pick up again and conclude until a few years later. This log touches on two storylines, the Jantalar storyline and the Vvrael storyline. I've cut it off at the point where the Vvrael took center stage on that particular night. (The rest of it can be read in the Vvrael Saga section.) In this part, the Silver Gryphons were providing information and holding a question and answer session so that adventurers could be up to date on what was known and start to prepare for what might happen.

 

 

>[Moot Hall, Assembly Room]
In this large assembly room meetings are convened to deal with the affairs of the town, and the locals hold their religious and social events. There is ample room for benches, long tables and other furnishings befitting special occasions. Sconces for torches, chandeliers holding many candles, and broad windows impart a warm, friendly glow of good fellowship to this space.
You also see the Omalisp disk, a double door, a louvered door and a large plaque.

He appears to be in his 50's, has short, straight black hair, multihued eyes, and pale skin.
He has a swollen left eye.
He is wearing a gold ring, a crystal amulet, some soft grey thrak hide gloves, some thrak hide leathers, a silver pentagram earring, a glaes Fash'lo'nae symbol, some steel-rimmed spectacles, a blackened mesh wand harness, a scorched black leather belt, a midnight blue velvet gem pouch, a woven rolaren thigh-sheath, some enruned Fash'lo'nae bracers, a translucent spidersilk backpack, a laje banded tower shield, a gold-stringed thrak skin sack, a silver sea thrak pendant, a black satin skullcap, a pair of light orc hide sandals, and a shadowy spidersilk cloak.

s>Errick shrugs.

He appears to be in his 30's, has long, braided dark brown hair, grey eyes, and fair skin.
He is in good shape.
He is wearing a griffin crested helm, a silver Brigatta pin, some soft leather boots, a blood red cloak, a metal aventail, a sunstone wedding band, a small gold lockpick earring, some double leather, some soft black thrack hide gloves, a red glaes spider charm, a pure white shield, and a golden cloak clasp of an intricate knot surrounding a lockpick.

Percilus says, "i was just told by those who had seen it that you had to be very high ranking to get into your order"

s>Welan says, "don't speak about diapers lad..... I was fighting off invaders while you were no more then a glint in your mothers eye...and I can vouch for Erricks value"

s>Percilus says, "i doubt it Welan"

s>Hercule laughs!

s>Alcan nods to Welan.

s>Jafirnn bows to Welan.

s>Percilus says, "i been in the lands for quite some time"

s>Errick shakes his head.

s>Arianiss says, "I don't think we're here to argue.."

s>You mutter something inaudible.

s>Titaniia nods to Wanton.

s>Titaniia says, "Allrights.."

s>Wanton says, "er.. I thought this was supposed to be an enlightening discussion tonight.. not an excuse to bicker."

s>Knife says, "some are always here ta argue"

s>Wanton smiles.

s>Titaniia says, "If e'ryone will be seated.."

s>Percilus says, "it was"

s>Percilus says, "until he insulted me"

s> Titaniia says, "We kin get started."

s>Harklon says, "can't beat a meeting for petty bickering"

s>Buerrto says, "If we cant bicker Im leavin"

s>Hercule begins chuckling at Buerrto.

s>Titaniia says, "I will says a few things first..an then Errick an Wanton will answer questions."

s>Titaniia says, "If ye wish ta asks a question..raise yer hand..an Pyranth will call ye in order."

"Thankee all fer joinin us this eve. Tis th' third weekly talk given by th' Order of th' Silver Gryphon, an we will be discussing th' Mandis Crystal."

"Afore we get down to th' matter at hand, I would just like ta explain quickly why it is so important that ye, th' citizens of th' Landing become well informed, an quickly."

s>You lean forward.

s>Titaniia recites:

"By now, I am sure most of ya know of th' threat posed to our fair town by th' Baron Hochstib an his army. "

s>Hercule nods to Titaniia.

s>Titaniia recites:

"What some do nae realize... is that Hochstib has nearly completed th' road from Jantalar to here. Th' only thing holding back th' hoardes of soldiers he commands is winter weather. We must be prepared by first thaw, as he could attack anytime thereafter."

s>Hercule's face turns slightly pale.

s>Titaniia recites:

"Hochstib has two huge advantages in th' war to come. First, he has an immense army, larger then any force our small town has ever imagined. Second, he possesses a weapon which has th' ability to stop all magiks...th' Mandis Crystal."

s>Neparr blinks.

s>A pained expression crosses Rayvynne's face.

s>You furrow your brow, probably adding a wrinkle or two in the process.

s>Titaniia recites:

"We know a few things about th' Mandis Crystal.."

s>Percilus shakes his head.

s>Titaniia recites:

"Th' Crystal is massive It must be carted around on a wagon."

s>Harklon smirks.

s>Titaniia recites:

"Th' Crystal is a very dark color, probably black It looks like an uncut gem."

s>Titaniia recites:

"Th' Crystal literally sucks th' mana out of th' very air. When it is in use, it gets very hot."

s>Rayvynne's face turns slightly pale.

s>Cynwal blinks.

s>Titaniia recites:

"When th' Baron brings th' Mandis Crystal into battle, he generally brings it within at least a couple of miles of th' front. "

s>Knife raises an eyebrow.

s>Titaniia recites:

"When th' Baron has th' Crystal on th' field of battle, it is generally very heavily guarded."

s>Titaniia recites:

"Our best hope for survival as free people is to destroy th' Crystal afore th' battle starts. Failing that, we will have to fite our way to it, an destroy as we can. That is where you, th' good free folk of this town come in."

s>Titaniia says, "Now..if ye raise yer hands..Pyranth will call on ye in order."

s>Hercule raises his hand.

s>Arianiss raises his hand.

Omalisp raises his hand.

s>Rayvynne raises her hand.

s>Percilus raises his hand.

s>Pyranth points at Hercule.

s>Pyranth says, "Hercule Be the first"

s>Hercule asks, "You said it gets hot WHEN it's in use. That mean Hotchstib can turn it on & off? And how big is the range of that thing?"

s>Errick says, "It doesn't appear that it can be turned on and off"

s>Hercule asks, "Wouldn't that mean it'd be red hot all the time?"

s>Errick says, "And the range was reported on a similar crystal in another battle of being several miles."

s>Errick says, "As is sucks up the mana it would be hot. Once it has sucked it up it may cool off."

s>Hercule says, "Ah"

s>Cynwal shifts his weight.

s>Wanton says, "And we have to remember that not every land is as full of nodes and mana as ours."

s>Pyranth says, "Arianiss Be next"

s>Errick nods to Wanton.

s>Arianiss says, "Several questions.."

s>Arianiss says, "One brought up by Errick.."

s>Wanton nods to Arianiss.

s>Arianiss smiles at Errick.

s>Wanton says, "one at a time though ;)"

s>Arianiss says, "You mentiond a similar crystal in another battle.."

s>Arianiss asks, "There's more than one?"

s>Lord Percilus went through a double door.

s>Wanton says, "Yes.. the Empress of the Turamzyyran Empire seems to have a "supply" of them."

s>You grimace.

s>Arianiss nods.

s>Shirkon says, "Erk"

s>Jafirnn blinks.

s>Arianiss furrows his brow.

s>Wanton says, "We don't know where she gets them though."

s>Hercule shudders.

s>A pained expression crosses Rayvynne's face.

s>Raddik frowns.

s>Arianiss says, "We'll have to take that in account when dealing with it.."

s>Arianiss nods to Wanton.

s>Malicae asks, "Ever wonder why the Faendryl haven't tried to take the Empire head on?"

s>Cynwal rubs his chin thoughtfully.

s>Alcan says, "Could cause problems in the future."

s>Pyranth says, "Omalisp Be next"

s>Omalisp nods.

s>Omalisp says, "Do we plan to smash the crystal to destroy it or what? Generally, the best way to shatter it would be with magic, but I don't believe that will work."

s>Rayvynne says, " wonder what one o them crystals would do ta Terate"

s>Rayvynne whistles tunelessly to herself.

s>Rayvynne stares off into space.

s>Hercule smiles at Rayvynne.

s>(Jafirnn points to his right bicep.)

s>Jafirnn nods to Omalisp.

s>Malicae says, "NOthing. Terate is anti-mana. Completely different thing"

s>Titaniia smiles at Jafirnn.

s>Omalisp rubs his chin thoughtfully.

s>Jafirnn chuckles.

s>Omalisp says, "Sounds tough to break a crystallized strutcure that large."

s>You nod to Omalisp.

s>Rayvynne says, " perhaps nae if ye get it heated up enough"

s>Rayvynne shrugs.

s>Omalisp nods to Rayvynne.

s>Errick says, "It is our plan to destroy it yes."

s>Pyranth says, "Rayvynne Be next"

s>Rayvynne says, " a few thins"

>Rayvynne asks, " ferst how close does that thin hae ta git afore we kinnae cast?"

s>Rayvynne shudders.

s>Arianiss says, "Several miles.."

s>Wanton says, "As Errick said, it has a range of several miles."

s>Wanton smiles.

s>You grumble.

s>Rayvynne says, " we may want ta be sure that tha werd gits out fer empats ta be well stocked wit herbs jus in case"

s>You nod to Rayvynne.

s>Wanton asks, "It would be some help if the empaths and clerics could coordinate with us... is there a guild or a group of them we should contact?"

s>Rayvynne says, " second"

s>Wanton says, "We are contacting House Sovyn right now."

s>Wanton smiles at Rayvynne.

s>Vickylynn says, "I thought a meantion of 3 miles last week"

s>Pyranth says, " Vickylynn Be next"

s>You say, "All need to stock up in flasks then also."

s>Vickylynn says, "we are not to use any spells during this time from what I understand. So is there a plan to keep all in the lands informed on not using spells? For I understand this is how the Crystal is able to suck the mana up. "

s>Rayvynne says, " if this thing heats up as it eats manna, mebbe we kin focus enough manna inta it ta blow it up from too much heat, as we hae more magicks here than tha crystals normal evirnment"

s>Errick asks, "I'm not sure I understand Vicky?"

>(Malicae nervously glances over his shoulder.)

s>Errick says, "Won't be a matter of telling folk not to use magic. It simply won't work."

s>Vickylynn says, "I under that the crystal gets the mana from us casting spells"

s>Errick shakes his head.

s>Rayvynne says, " nae using spells is couse of tha Vvrael"

s>Titaniia says, "If yer magiks start to work..ye will know th' Crystal is destroyed."

s>Rayvynne says, " they are growin stronga on our spells"

s>Vickylynn says, "Is there a plan of telling all in the lands at the time not to cast spells"

s>Errick says, "It uses up what you draw upon to use magic."

s>Malicae says, "Case and point. Tertae went on a killing spree on anyone who cast spells. People were warned, still cast them, and continued to do so after others were killed"

s>You say, "You simply will not be able to."

s>Vickylynn says, "Am I wrong on this"

s>Errick nods to Vickylynn.

s>Vickylynn says, "So we can not prep spells"

s>Malicae says, "It would be an excercise in futility"

s>Malicae nods to Vickylynn.

s>Wanton says, "Rayvynne, the way I understand it, folks won't have any mana to even try to cast, when the mandis crystals are in range. So they wouldn't be able to send mana to it. Besides it is heavily guarded. But we'll consider that idea a little more thoroughly, since we don't really know how it works."

s>Wanton asks, "that answer your question, Rayvynne?"

s>Rayvynne nods to Wanton.

s>Arianiss asks, "Do we have any knowledge of where the crystal is kept when not in use?"

Wanton says, "Well.."

s>Wanton says, "We're not personally sure of where it is right now."

s>Arianiss nods to Wanton.

s>Titaniia nods to Wanton.

s>Arianiss asks, "And suggested places?"

s>Errick says, "Well I'd look for a huge mass of folk..."

s>Malicae says, "With pikes"

s>Errick says, "and right in the middle of them, there's probably a wagon..."

s>Malicae nods to Errick.

s>Arianiss says, "It's hard to move an army as one.."

s>Arianiss says, "You break it up.."

s>Errick says, "Likely it's there."

Wanton nods to Arianiss.

s>Wanton says, "Yes.. like Titaniia said, the crystal is very heavily guarded."

s>Pyranth says, "Cynwal Be next"

s>Wanton says, "at least, that's what we heard from someone who witnessed him taking over another city."

s>Malicae says, "Of course, Hobstich could have several wagons to prevent a direct attack against one"

s>Arianiss says, "I'd say we attack them before they attack us.."

s>Arianiss nods to Malicae.

s>You nod to Malicae.

s>Malicae says, "That would be sort of suicidal. We are outnumbered by the thousands"

s>Arianiss says, "We'd have the advantage of surprise.."

s>You ask, "Thousands?"

s>You gulp.

s>Arianiss nods to you.

s>Arianiss says, "More."

s>Errick says, "the information we received made it quite clear that if we tried to attack them on the road, we'd be defeated easily."

s>Malicae says, "I am being conservative. More like tens of thousands"

s>Omalisp says, "Like maybe 3000 of us, 150000 of them if they are a respectable army."

s>Wanton nods to Omalisp.

s>Malicae says, "Hobstiches usual tact is to move a crystal in, neutralize magic, and then sweep over an area with waves of men"

s>Titaniia nods to Omalisp.

You nod to Malicae.

s>Wanton nods to Malicae.

s>Wanton says, "exactly."

s>Malicae says, "Eventually, even an ant army can bring a boar down, so the Giantman say"

s>Malicae says, "Same principle"

s>Alcan says, "Just means we need to take out 5000 men each...."

s>You chuckle at Alcan.

s>Hercule says, "But the boar's the one who's outnumbered"

s>Malicae says, "That's my point. We are the boar"

s>Malicae smiles grimly

s>Titaniia says, "Our strongest advantage is our very weakness."

s>Shirkon says, "Sounds like we need to stop them in the pass where their full numbers can't be used and then destroy the crystal. "

s>Alcan says, "And these ants are very very big."

s> You raise an eyebrow in Titaniia's direction.

s>Titaniia says, "We are so few...an th' Baron will never expect us to defends ourselves."

s>Wanton says, "We certainly do hope that Hochstib underestimates us."

s>Arianiss says, "Nor would he expect us to outright attack.."

s>Titaniia says, "If we are organized...we will have th' advantage of suprise.."

s>Rayvynne nods to Titaniia.

s>Neparr says, "how does this crystal effect spells that have already been cast upon one, such as massies?"

s>Omalisp says, "Aye, we could go to River's rest to cast the spells."

s>Errick says, "It pull spells on you off"

s>Omalisp sighs.

s>Omalisp nods.

s>Shirkon says, "Hmmmm...."

s>Arianiss narrows his eyes.

Neparr shudders.

s>Cynwal says, "if in fact catches all free manna the boot to the rest may not work"

s>You ask, "So it not only abosrbs mana but also already cast spells?"

s>Errick nods to you.

s>Titaniia says, "Th' mana is somehow still contained in th' spells...we have noticed th' same with th' Vvreal..I believe...different subject, though."

s>You say, "I liked that idea Omalisp."

s>You grin.

s>Chisandra asks, "A bit of a deviation for the crystal. Should we be more careful in the amount of spells we are casting if the Vvrael are feeding off them?"

s>Titaniia says, "Sorry, Chisandra..I should nae has brought that up..we ..with th' exception of Wanton here..are nae experts on that issue."

s>Wanton says, "yes.. wanted to say that I'll be happy to discuss the Vvrael after we are finished with this meeting."

s>Wanton smiles.

s>Rayvynne says, " the onla LK that MAY werk is Voln preservation"

s>Arianiss says, "A flask.."

s>Arianiss says, "That is a potion.."

s>Rayvynne says, " and 2 , we kinnae raise tha dead of that crystal gits here"

You say, "Aye, flasks. A potion should work."

s>Hercule says, "By the Gods... Rayvynne's right"

s>Hercule's face turns slightly pale.

s>Rayvynne says, " that werks both ways"

Arianiss says, "They can afford the losses.."

s>Rayvynne says, " they kinnae raise they dead eitha"

s>You nod to Rayvynne.

s>Arianiss says, "Let us put it this way."

s>Rayvynne says, " if we kin take out a large numba by surprise tho.."

s>Omalisp asks, "Could we assasinate their leader?"

s>Arianiss says, "If the crystal isn't destroyed..we won't survive"

s>Shirkon says, "But they have more to spare then we will"

s>Malicae says, "They don't need to. They have numbers, and their dead have a habit of rising up and fighting again if you know what I mean"

s>Malicae smiles evilly

s>You ask, "Really?"

s>Hercule asks, "You mean they're allied with Luukos!?"

s>You blink at Malicae.

s>Hercule growls ferociously!

s>Rayvynne's face turns slightly pale.

s>Vickylynn asks, "Is there a way we can enter this road before the thaw?"

s>Errick shakes his head.

s>Errick says, "No it's totally in snow."

s>Errick says, "Luckily for us last year it did not thaw over spring and summer"

Arianiss says, "It's not the only route..just the only route that an army can use"

s>Vickylynn nods to Errick.

s>Malicae says, "A few questions. You had some mention of previous crystals. What happened to these crystals, and were any destroyed. I'll understand if you can't answer that directly to protect your sources"

s>Wanton says, "Truthfully.. we're not completely sure.."

s>Wanton says, "We know that the Empress has supplied Hochstib with mandis crystals in the past.."

s>Wanton says, "logically, if the mandis crystal can be used again, he would.. but it seems that he needed a new one a time or two.."

s>Wanton says, "so it must have been destroyed.. or all it's power used up.... or something."

s>You say, "hmmm"

s>Malicae says, "Thus indicating they were used or destroyed"

s>Wanton says, "maybe it got full of mana."

s>Titaniia nods to Wanton.

Wanton nods to Malicae.

s>Hercule says, "Or it melted"

s>Malicae says, "Ok. Question two ..."

s>Wanton says, "used, I would say.. rather than destroyed.."

s>Wanton says, "unless using it destroys it eventually."

s>Malicae says, "We knnow the empress is allied with Luukos. Has there been any links established between Hobstich and Luujkos"

s>Malicae says, "And Luukos, not to be confused with Luujkos"

s>You grin.

s>Wanton says, "We have heard rumors that many in Jantalar serve Luukos."

s>Rayvynne frowns.

s>Arianiss says, "The city of Jantalar needs to be razed.."

s>Arianiss narrows his eyes.

s>Wanton says, "Welan will elaborate."

s>Wanton smiles.

s>Hercule says, "Wanton said many. Not all. The innocent shoudl not be punished for the sins of a few"

>Titaniia mutters something about Luukos.

s>Welan says, "Hochstib is the Empresses man.....he's as much in Lukoos's bed as she is"

s>Titaniia nods to Welan.

s>Welan says, "we know that he has given some of his troops to Luukosian priests for "experiments"

s>Hercule shudders.

s>You shudder.

s>Malicae blinks at Welan.

s>Arianiss says, "Not just troops.."

s>Arianiss says, "Slaves as well.."

s>Shirkon says, "Couldn't we search for the pass and fortify our end? If the crystal be the first to show I think if we could somehow douse the crystal while it was hot with some liquid it would shatter it and render it useless."

s>Errick says, "We're working on various plans to deal with the crystal."

s>Shirkon says, "If we could keep them on a narrow front our few would be worth many of them"

s>Titaniia says, "Aye, strategy is th' key."

s>Cynwal asks, "what is the degree of training the baron gives his troops and do they fight as a unit or as individuals?"

s>Shirkon says, "I remember a story of old where 600 held off hundreds of thousands at a pass"

s>Wanton says, "Hochstib has taken over three other cities in the past. Big cities.. not towns like ours."

s>Wanton says, "and he's gotten more powerful since he's expanded his borders by taking those cities."

s>You nod.

s>Wanton says, "I would imagine that his troops were well coordinated before.. and are even better now."

s>Wanton asks, "does that answer your question?"

s>Cynwal says, "yes, and it also gives me an idea, seek to slay officers first"

s>Wanton says, "we'll pass that on."

s>Wanton smiles at Cynwal.

(Malicae nervously glances over his shoulder.)

s>You say, "What is being done to organize us then? Aside from clerics and empaths. What about organizing to fight. Tis quite clear to me I would rather go down in battle than to survive and live under the Baron."

s>Cynwal says, "remember ye will not be able to augment ye skills with manna"

s>Cryheart nods.

s>Cynwal says, "each of us will be the less of a fighter fer it"

s>You ask, "Aye, but we are told we have a chance. So what is it?"

s>You grin.

s>Argivean says, "I doubt ya woul' live unner 'im... 'e 'az I policy I 'ear uv killin' off non-humanz..."

s>You nod to Argivean.

s>Lerys nods to Argivean.

Titaniia says, "We are currently seeking th' leaders of clans, houses, guilds an any other groups..secret or nae." s>Vickylynn's face turns slightly pale.

s>Titaniia says, "Even those whose ideas of what is right an wrong may differ from ours...e'ryone of us has th' same goal here."

s>Lerys nods to Titaniia.

s>You ask, "And doing what? Will we be training to fight as teams? Is the strategy to fight from the shadows, or has that been decided?"

s>Titaniia says, "None wishes to see their family or friends in a collar."

s>You nod to Titaniia.

s>You feel the blood drain from your face.

s>(Hercule nods grimly to Titaniia)

s>Titaniia says, "We have a team of strategists."

s>Titaniia says, "We hope to know our strength an have e'ryone with plans in time."

s>You nod to Titaniia. s>Jafirnn's face turns slightly pale.

s>Titaniia says, "If ye all would mention this to yer house leaders...an any other groups ye belong to..would be helpful."

s>Lerys asks, "Ze Jantalarianz best weapon be ze crystalz, yez?"

s>Lerys asks, "Iz zere a known way tae destroy zem?"

s>Wanton says, "We have never heard of a mandis crystal being destroyed before."

s>Lerys asks, "Fer instance, are zey overloadable, doez metal casin'z hurt zeir ability tae function, et cetera?"

s>You say, "Hmmm, shielding it is an interesting idea."

s>Lerys asks, "Hmm.. Would na ze best way tae fight ze Jantalarianz be tae hae a warrior skilt in war criez in every group, zen?"

s>Wanton says, "any thoughts on how to destroy the mandis crystal would be welcomed"

s>Lerys asks, "Wot about ziz pazz? How big iz it?"

s>Lerys asks, "Five mean abreast on horsez, er wot?"

s>Wanton says, "Not sure, Lerys.. big enough for an army to pass through."

s>Wanton says, "big enough for a wagon holding a crystal to go through."

s>Wanton says, "and the crystals are big enough that it takes 6 horses to pull the wagon (or was it 8 horses?)"

s>Lerys says, "Well, if'nz ye kin blocade ze passage slightly when it startz tae zaw.."

s>Lerys says, "Zen ye kin uze archerz tae pick ze defensez o' ze wagon off"

s>Wanton blinks at Lerys.

s>Wanton slaps herself on the forehead.

s>Wanton says, "I hadn't even thought of archers." (Ed. Note: seems like an obvious thing to miss, but bows had only been recently released into the game.)

s>Titaniia says, "Very good thought."
